STRANGE to say, there are folks, otherwise sane, who cherish the delusion that the first century of the Christian era contained only 99 years, and each subsequent century 100, as the name implies. By the same reckoning that these queer arithmeticians adopt, we must suppose that every baby is born one year old. Not even the Astronomer-Royal's official declaration, that the 20th century begins January 1 1901, has convinced them, so perhaps it would be but waste labour on our part to make an attempt where even he has failed.
