THE REV. W. C. E. NEWBOLT (Canon and Chancellor of St Paul's) moved the following resolution [at the English Church Union's 41st anniversary conference]: "That this Union, believing that many of the differences which divide the members of the Church of England are largely due to misunderstandings, and are often more apparent than real, expresses its thankfulness that the proposal for holding a Conference for mutual explanation has been brought forward."
He said the very first thing they had to do when they met together was to come to some very definite conclusion of the nature of a Genevan |
Convention to fight fair. (Hear, hear.) In war men were not allowed to use explosive bullets, or to poison wells, or to fire on the wounded. A man did not cease to be a Christian because he disagreed with them. A man did not cease to be a gentleman because he disbelieved certain things which they believed; a man did not cease to be a man because he happened to feel strongly on some point of the Catholic faith. He thought they ought to agree at the Conference to have a downright repudiation of such things as rioting in church and making a mock of religion, and that such things ought to be left to the Boers and the Chinese. (Cheers.)
